I have a 2 1/2 year old pitt bull-boxer mix. He LOVES to chew on soft dog toys (like stuffed animal kinds of things) but he tears them to pieces in minutes and I don’t want him to get sick from swallowing anything (even though I always supervise him). What kinds of toys would be good? I’ve given him nyla bones, kongs, and tennis balls but he just doesn’t seem to care about them. Thanks.
Thanks for all the great advice!!

Any chew toy. Any one that squeaks. Tug of war toys. Cheap ones.

They make toys out of kevlar and fire hose. They’re soft toys but can stand up to strong chewers.

Kong makes a pretty good toy with a goofy name like a wubba I think.
They are squeaky and have a canvas covering so they aren’t like typical kongs although they are tough. I have a weimaraner and they can typically make short work of any type of toy, but this one seems to be pretty durable.

my 2 year old yorkie does the same thing on soft dog toys until i discovered kong. It really depends on the preference of your dog and the toys they have been playing with since their puppy days. I would keep away the soft toys and leave the dog with the balls/kongs and play it with the dog to see if there are any improvements.

Have you tried to put peanut butter in his Kongs? That works for me with my dog. Also, we’ve found that real tennis balls last longer than dog-store tennis balls (100x longer). We also like to give her “mastadon” bones from Wal-Mart (between $8 and $9), which are the huge bones that take forever to eat. Knuckles are good, too, and are usually less expensive. My dog’s favorite chew toy is a hoofie, a cow’s foot. They smell nasty, but that is why she loves them. They are only 99 cents and last a long time. But they smell, so some of these are better for the outdoors or basements or kennels. We also love floss ropes, ropes with real dental floss in the rope. She loves tug of war, and this way it is good for her teeth.

My dog loves destroying soft dog toys, too, and I have stopped buying them except for once in awhile I’ll spend a dollar for a few minutes of her destructive entertainment… but no more than a dollar for a soft toy.

Peanut butter + kong = dog occupied for hours

Well what I have is like a round circle or a stick kind of thing that kinda is like a tennis ball, but a little softer and it has a squeaky toy in it which really helps if the dog doesn’t like it as much. Just squeak it and it may become interested.
    OR
You could just get one of those tug-a-war ropes and play a little bit of tug-a-war. Just note if your dog is bad behaved you may not want to play tug-a-war with him, that may cause him to get worse.

if you go to any pet store ( pets smart, petco) and you go to the toy isle they have special soft toys that have super tough lining for dogs like yours. they come in all sizes shapes and colors. i have a dog just like yours and they work perfectly. their just as soft but they don’t have the annoying mess. you should really check into it
